A Happy or Fulfilled New Year?

It’s that time of year ... when everyone resolves to make their lives better, get healthy, create change and live boldly. Unfortunately, most New Year’s resolutions go unresolved. People throw in the towel long before any real change is made.

Why is it you just can’t stick with your resolution? It obviously was something important to you. Let’s face it, out of ALL the things you could have chosen ... you chose THIS one (or more than one) resolution. This desired resolution has been heavy on your mind. You want positive change in your life.  You want more. You deserve better. So why is it you just can’t seem to stick with it?

WHY? Because it’s not easy. It’s HARD. Really hard. And most likely, your New Year’s resolution isn’t making you very happy. In our happiness-seeking society, YOU, my friend are being tested. You can’t log on to social media without a message reminding you to “live happy,” “get happy,” “be happy” or “choose happy.” But the feeling of “happiness” doesn’t often come with change. The feeling of happiness doesn’t come with cutting calories, sweating it out at the gym, getting up early, saving money, drinking protein shakes, limiting alcohol and caffeine, quitting smoking and getting out of your comfort zone to take your career to the next level.

Before we connect the dots of getting from resolution/change to fulfillment, we have to talk about the pain of getting there. There are two types of pain: the pain of discipline and the pain of regret. Discipline doesn’t usually make you “happy,” but it does make you fulfilled. Regret often happens because we chose the easy route, didn’t take the chance, didn’t believe we were worth it, quit and — at the time — chose to be happy vs. fulfilled.

And here we are. But, I have good news.

It’s OK if you’re not happy 24/7. What if in 2018 you shifted your focus from being happy to being fulfilled? It’s a subtle shift that that will allow you to be who you came to be. Fulfillment comes with faith, courage, love, discipline, tenacity, dedication and hard work. If you want to live fulfilled I encourage you to stick with your resolution. Sticking to your resolution will provide you massive amounts of fulfillment that will lead to sustainable change and epic moments of success and — wait for it — happiness.

Refocus your attention. Stop focusing on how hard the change is, and focus on how fulfilling the work is. Fulfillment comes with the work and when you ardently believe you can achieve your resolution. Do you believe you’re worth it? Or are you going to throw in the towel to get happy? The choice is YOURS.

Choose fulfillment. I believe you’re worth it. Cheers to a FULFILLED New Year!
