We are not our thoughts

Did you know that 80% of our daily thoughts are negative, biased, and repetitive? It’s surprising, and honestly, a bit overwhelming when we consider how much of our mental energy goes to thoughts that don’t actually serve us.

But here’s the good news: we are not our thoughts. Who we are is defined by how we choose to show up in response to those thoughts. Emotional intelligence helps us recognize this distinction, allowing us to move from simply reacting to thoughtfully responding. I call this mental fitness.

Here are a few ways to take back control:

1. Shift from Reaction to Intention

Negative thoughts will come, but they don’t define us. When a thought strikes, take a pause and recognize it as just a thought. Ask yourself how you want to respond. This small shift helps us choose intention overreaction.

2. Reframe and Replace

When a negative thought repeats, practice replacing it with something more empowering. For instance, if the thought “I’m not good enough” creeps in, reframe it to “I’m learning and growing.” With practice, this can shift your mindset and elevate your confidence.

3. Engage in Present Moment Practices

Try gratitude journaling, mindfulness, or simply focusing on the present to quiet the repetitive cycle. These practices allow us to step out of autopilot and connect with the here and now, where our true power lies.

Remember, emotional intelligence isn’t about never having negative thoughts – it’s about knowing they don’t define us. Who we are is reflected in the choices we make, especially when it’s tough. Let’s choose to show up with intention and authenticity today.

Keep Shining - Be who you came to be.
