One Day at a Time

As we’re getting closer to moving Ben to college, I’ve caught myself fast-forwarding.

…Thinking about August.

…Thinking about an empty bedroom.

…Thinking about how different life is about to look.

The reality is, between now and then, I have six keynote events across the country, countless baseball games with Jack, and a calendar that’s packed with moments I don’t want to miss.

It’s so easy to start living in the future instead of the present. But every time I do, I remind myself…

I don’t have to live August in July.

One of the greatest gifts I’ve given myself is learning to take life one day at a time. It doesn’t mean I don’t plan. It doesn’t mean I ignore what’s ahead. It simply means I stop trying to emotionally carry tomorrow before it gets here.

When I find myself spiraling with anxiety, I ask, “What is actually required of me today?”  Usually, the answer is far simpler than my mind wants me to believe.

We truly have very little control over tomorrow. But we do have influence over today.

…Today’s attitude.

…Today’s choices.

…Today’s conversations.

…Today’s opportunities to love the people right in front of us. So often we rob ourselves of today’s joy by rehearsing tomorrow’s worries.

Yes, prepare. Yes, be responsible. But don’t miss the life you’re living because you’re already living in the next chapter.

One day at a time isn’t settling - It’s emotional intelligence. It’s mental fitness. It’s trusting that when tomorrow arrives, you’ll handle it just like you’ve handled every other day before it.

Today is enough. Enjoy the moments.
